Seeing the Destruction

Countdown time. In five days we will be on the road to N'awlins.

Its going to be overwhelming to see the miles upon miles of utter destruction. We been told we might come back from New Orleans with more questions then answers in regards to recovery work. A leader from Rhino, Sarah Tuttle, says: "Volunteers like you remind the residents of New Orleans that they are cared for. We ask for your continued prayers and support. We cannot say it enough... this city will need you for a long time." A long time.

I am one of the ones who has never been to New Orleans. I am trying to imagine if my house had been destroyed. What if I was at the mercy of strangers? I think about when my husband and I invite people over for dinner. Thirty minutes before guests arrive we are scrambling around the house trying to put the place in order and make people believe we practice the basic principles of personal hygiene. We want to put our best foot forward. We want people to be comfortable. We take pride in making people feel at home in our home.

So I think about if volunteers were coming to my city, my town, my place. Yes, there would be a feeling of great gratitude in regards to those who choose to help. But I also think there would be a part of me straightening my shoulders, ready to impress. I'd long to make people comfortable and see why its important to rebuild. I'd want people to enjoy life with me. Feel the energy and vitality that makes up the spirit of New Orleans. The last thing that I'd want people to see is only the destruction.

I am looking forward to discovering the jewels that represent the spirit of New Orleans. Its going to be hard work. Its going to be painful to see all the destruction. But I am excited. I am excited for residents to show us the mosaic that has been and is becoming New Orleans. We have the privelege of playing a small part in the rebuilding efforts and experience a taste of why New Orleans is worth the effort. The city needs the world's support for years to come, and something is springing forth in New Orleans.
